Among the many pieces of equipment we offer at the DSC for students to check out and use are two different types of drawing tablets that can be used not only for drawing but also for applications like Blender, or even simply as a large trackpad.
At the DSC, we have two different types of tablets, the Huion Inspiroy and Huion Kamvas. Both tablets can be used for the same purposes: as a large trackpad, to draw, and to 3D model among other things. However, the difference is that the Kamvas can be used as an extended or mirrored display, while the Inspiroy can only be used as a tablet, as it doesn’t have a screen.
Each tablet kit comes with a pen, a pen stand, and cables to connect the tablet to your computer. The tablets have a USB-C port that can be connected with a cable that has a USB-C to USB-A or C port (the cable comes with the kit).
Once you connect the tablet to the computer, it should automatically turn on. However, if it doesn’t the Kamvas has a button on the top left side of the tablet.
Once the tablet is connected, open the Huion application on your computer. If you are using one of the DSC’s computers, it is already installed, however if you are using your own, download it here and type in the name of the tablet you are using into the search bar.
Then open the application. Here you can customize the different buttons and pen controls. However, this step is optional, as the tablets will work as soon as you plug them in.
For both the Kamvas and Insiproy:
Both tablets have the same basic layout, with only minor differences in the aesthetics.
The first tab is “Pen display.” This is where you can customize the left-side buttons.
To the right of the “Press Key” tab is the “Working area.” Here you can control how much screen space the tablet can use. Drag the teal border to shrink the working area, or leave it as is.
The second main tab is the “Digital Pen”, where you can customize the pen settings.
The tab to the right of the “Pen Display” tab lets you adjust the pressure sensitivity of the pen. This is most helpful for drawing when you want a more pen or pencil-like feel. With this, you can play around with the settings until you find one that works for you.
Since the Kamvas has a screen, you can use it multiple ways. You can mirror the main display, use it as an extended display, or use it as your main screen and your monitor as the extended display.
Find this in Settings on Mac under the Displays tab.
Once your tablet is plugged in and you have customized the controls to the way you want them, you are ready to use the tablets. Hover the pen over the screen of the Kamvas, or the center of the Inspiroy and you should see the mouse cursor on your screen move in accordance. Click on something but pressing the pen to the tablet; and you can drag things by pressing and dragging the pen around the tablet. You can use the tablet as a large trackpad, or as a drawing/designing tool. Just open a software like Photoshop, Illustrator or Blender and test out the tablets. You can draw and paint on Photoshop, and the tablets give you more control over your designs/creations in Illustrator and Blender.
The land on which we gather is the unceded territory of the Awaswas-speaking Uypi Tribe. The Amah Mutsun Tribal Band, comprised of the descendants of indigenous people taken to missions Santa Cruz and San Juan Bautista during Spanish colonization of the Central Coast, is today working hard to restore traditional stewardship practices on these lands and heal from historical trauma.
The land acknowledgement used at UC Santa Cruz was developed in partnership with the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band Chairman and the Amah Mutsun Relearning Program at the UCSC Arboretum.
