Student Employment

The University Library Center for Digital Scholarship employs students in both of our physical spaces.  Our regular hiring window is in September, though we occasionally have positions open up during the academic year.  Email us at digitalscholarship@ucsc.edu with questions.

DSC Student Assistants

Our DSC Student Assistants are based out of the Digital Scholarship Commons on the ground floor of McHenry Library.  Students in this position support our digital creation tools including audio capture, video capture, photography, and digital exhibit creation.  During a typical year, these students perform the following tasks:

  • Train on DSC supported methods
  • Train on any classes that the DSC supports during the quarter
  • Hold 4 public hours of peer to peer support (During remote quarters, these hours are held via a chat service.) 
  • Support students using the DSC spaces, including the DSC Lab, Audio Production Studio, and VizLab
  • Review and update existing online software and hardware tutorials
  • Train for and support any DSC workshops that match with the students skill set and availability.

As students finish the basic training for the space, they have additional opportunities to:

  • Specialize their training on specific digital skills
  • Support library projects using digital scholarship methods 
  • Recommend projects for the Digital Scholarship department to pursue
  • Develop new tutorials for the Digital Scholarship website

 

DSI Student Assistants

Our DSI Student Assistants are based out of the Digital Scholarship Innovation Studio on the ground floor of the Science and Engineering Library.  Students in this position support our 3D technologies in the DSI lab including 3D printing, 3D modeling, 3D scaning, and related tools.  During a typical year, these students perform the following tasks:

  • Train on DSI supported tools and methods
  • Train on any classes that the DSI supports during the quarter
  • Hold their shifts in the DSI space to supervise space use and check out equipment (During remote quarters, this task is not part of the regular work)
  • Support students using the DSI
  • Train for and support any DSI workshops that match with the student's skill set and availability.

As students finish the basic training for the space, they have additional opportunities to:

  • Specialize their training on specific DSI equipment or methods
  • Support library projects using DSI equipment and related skills
  • Recommend projects for the Digital Scholarship department to pursue
  • Develop new tutorials for the Digital Scholarship website
