In 2014, Head of Special Collections & Archives Elisabeth Remak-Honnef started CART in order to more fully integrate primary resources into graduate student research and teaching on the UCSC campus, to provide paid, practical work experience to graduate students in a library and archives setting, and to encourage collaborative research in the curation of physical and digital exhibits. In 2017, an endowment was established for the continued support of the program, and CART was named in her honor.
