Building Your Academic Presence

What is ORCiD?

ORCiD is a unique identifier for you as an author. It allows research objects to be attached to your name even if you change institutions, or use different name variants over time. Many funders and publishers now require researchers to get an ORCiD, but researchers often aren't aware of ORCiD's auto-update features.

Steps to Setting up an ORCiD with auto-updating

Go to ORCiD and register for an identifier.

  • Fill in some details for your profile: your employer, name variants, website URL, keywords or biographical statement.
  • The agencies responsible for assigning DOIs to papers, code, data, books, etc, can automatically update your ORCiD record as you publish! But you need to give them permission:
    • Allow the DOI agency DataCite to automatically update to your ORCiD record. Log in with your brand new ORCiD account.
    • The first time you publish a paper or book and give the publisher your ORCiD, the DOI agency Crossref will email you through your ORCiD account. THIS IS YOUR AUTO-UPDATE CHANCE. Go to your ORCiD inbox and give Crossref permission to auto-update.
  • Use your ORCiD! Put it on your profile systems such as ResearchGate.
