Open Access at UCSC

About the UC Open Access Policies

The UC Open Access Policies enable authors to share their scholarly articles without embargo in eScholarship, UC’s open access repository and publishing platform, whether or not you publish open access directly with the publisher. As a UCSC author, articles that you publish after the start of the relevant policy* are covered.

Fulfilling the UC Open Access Policies as an Author

Here are the steps:

1. Publish as you would in the journal of your choice. You may agree to the publication contract as offered.

2. Share your article with UC, either by linking to the open access version or by uploading a copy of the right version (usually your accepted version, also called postprint).

a) If your article is already available open access with the publisher or in a repository, you may simply share the link via UC’s Publication Management System, and the article link will then appear in eScholarship.

b) If your article is not available openly with the publisher or in a repository, you may upload the permitted version to UC’s Publication Management System, and the article will then appear in eScholarship.

* Note that the policies’ dates vary depending on if you are faculty or staff and students:

  • Faculty: Senate Faculty members may share articles published at the start of the UC Systemwide Academic Senate Open Access Policy on July 24, 2013, or later.
  • Students and Staff: Authors under the UC Presidential Policy may share articles published October 23, 2015, or later.
