Explicitly state your research question, determine which databases you will search, and determine your inclusion/exclusion criteria for studies that you find. Here is some information on writing a protocol for your systematic review study. You might want to search PROSPERO, a database of protocols, to make sure that no one else is currently working on a review on the same topic. You can also submit your protocol to PROSPERO.
PICO can reduce bias and increase transparency in their search strategies. PICO can be adapted to various fields of study and research areas.
P | Population/Patient/Problem | What population or patient group are the investigators working with? It can also refer to the problem being investigated |
I | Intervention | What intervention is the intervention group receiving? |
C | Comparison/Control | Is there a control group, and if so, what intervention is the control group receiving? |
O | Outcome | What outcomes are being measured and how? |
Example: In adult patients with SLE, is consuming turmeric tea more effective than Plaquenil at reducing joint pain?
The SPICE Framework is used to formulate answerable questions for qualitative research in social science and healthcare.
S | Setting | Location of research/study |
P | Perspective | Group being studied |
I | Intervention | Treatment, prognostic factor, management strategy, diagnostic test or exposure |
C | Comparison | Control or alternative management strategy you would like to compare to the intervention |
E | Evaluation | Outcome measures |
Example: In assisted living facilities (S), do therapy dog visits (I) as opposed to no therapy dog visits (C), reduce feelings of loneliness (E) in older residents (P)?
Used for qualitative or mixed method research questions that evaluate the meaningfulness of experiences of a sample in lieu of a population.
S | Sample | Specific group being studied |
PI | Phenomenon of Interest | Reasons for decisions or behaviors |
D | Design | Form of research being used |
E | Evaluation | Outcome measures |
R | Research Type | Qualitative, mixed methods and//or quantitative |
Example:
For first-time mothers (S), does antenatal education (PI) positively affect their delivery experience (E)? Design (D) = interviews/surveys, Research Type (R) = Qualitative
Framework for qualitative research developed by Finnish educational researchers used to understand complex social and organizational phenomena.
C | Context | Which individuals, groups, systems or relationships are you focusing on? |
I | Intervention | Which event, action or activity are you investigating the effects of? |
M | Mechanism | Which responses to the intervention explain how it leads to the outcome? Which circumstances cause these responses? In which circumstances are these responses avoided? |
O | Outcomes | Which effects of the intervention have you chosen to focus on? How are you defining and measuring these effects? |
Example: Synthesised findings from case studies (mechanism) on business non-profit engagement in sustainability-oriented innovation (SOI) projects (intervention) with non-profit organisations (context) to generate a framework (outcomes) for the contribution and management of business non-profit engagement in SOI.
You might find that your topic does not always fall into one of the models listed on this page. You can always modify a model to make it work for your topic, and either remove or incorporate additional elements.
The important thing is to ensure that you have a high quality question that can be separated into its component parts.
This is also a great time to meet with a librarian to discuss your research approach.
