Access Library Resources from Off Campus

There are a few ways to access online library resources from off-campus. We recommend using the campus VPN to access these resources. UCSC students, faculty, emeriti, and staff with a current library account are eligible for the remote access service.

If you choose to login via the library proxy server, you can either use your CruzID gold password, or you can use your library barcode number. If you login using your library barcode number, it must be activated with the library before you can use this service. You may activate your library barcode number in the following ways:

  • In person at either Circulation Desk with your ID card.
  • Over the phone: McHenry (831) 459-5185 or S&E (831) 459-5300
  • Fill out this online form (Note: This option can take up to 24 hours.)

For more information and to log in, please refer to the Off Campus Access page.

Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service available to all affiliated UC faculty, staff and students (refer to the Patron Borrowing Categories page to verify eligibility).

  • There is no charge for the service.
  • Items not owned by UCSC may be ordered through Melvyl Request or UC-Elinks.
  • Courtesy borrowers may request UCSC-owned items stored at the Northern Regional Library Facility (NRLF) at no cost.
  • Members of the public can visit the NRLF Reading Room with a government issued ID (driver's license, state issued ID, passport) to access NRLF materials on-site.

For more information, please refer to the ILL webpage.

Equipment Loans

The library loans out the following equipment:

  • Laptops (Macbooks at McHenry, PCs at S&E)
  • Chromebooks
  • MacBook and Ipad Powercords
  • Mini DVI to VGA Port Adaptors (McHenry only)
  • Scientific and Graphing Calculators
  • Podcasting Equipment (Media Center)

These items check out for four hours, are renewable in person at either Circulation Desk, and can be checked out overnight.

Placing Holds

A borrower may request to have a currently checked out item held at either Circulation Desk when it is returned. Staff will notify the requesting patron through email or U.S. Mail once the item is available.

  • Items will be held for seven days at the Circulation Desk of the preferred library.
  • Items with holds placed on them may not be renewed.
  • Material on the hold shelf for another borrower may be viewed in the library for a limited amount of time.
  • Eligible borrowers (UCSC faculty, staff and students) may use Interlibrary Loan to request an item that is checked out as an alternative to placing a hold on it.

For more information, please visit the Place A Hold webpage.

Recalling Items

When a hold is placed on a checked out item, a Recall notice is sent to the patron requesting they return the item by a certain date. A recall can change the due date on checked out items. All patrons are guaranteed a 14-day loan period for most items in the circulating collections. After an item has been borrowed for 14 days, it may be subject to immediate recall. Items recalled for Reserves or Interlibrary Loan will be given a 7-day loan period.

  • All items recalled are assigned a due date of 14 days from the date of recall, unless the original due date is less than two weeks away, in which case the due date will remain the same (with the exception of items recalled for Reserves and ILL).
  • When an item has been recalled, the borrower who has the item checked out will be sent a recall notice specifying the new due date, if applicable.
  • Items that have been recalled may not be renewed.
  • Items not received by the stated due date are considered overdue. Overdue and billing procedures will begin after any applicable grace period has expired as with any other overdue material.
  • Eligible borrowers (UCSC faculty, staff and students) may use Interlibrary Loan to request an item that is checked out as an alternative to requesting to place a recall on it, provided the item is not on Course Reserves.

Missing Items

If a borrower cannot locate an item on the shelves, he/she may request that a search for the item be performed by staff.

  • Circulation Desk staff will initiate the search process.
  • When the item is located, the borrower will be notified and the item will be held at the Circulation Desk.

Renewing Items

Checked out items may be renewed if no holds or recalls have been placed on them by another borrower or the UCSC Reserves unit.

  • A request to renew an item may be made any time during the loan period. The new due date will be calculated from the date on which the renewal is made.
  • An item that has been billed for replacement must be physically returned to a Circulation Desk before it can be renewed and given a new due date. It must be checked in and re-checked out to the borrower.
  • Reference material may be renewed with the permission of a Reference Librarian.
  • All  videogames and consoles must be renewed in person, with the items present.

Renewals may be accomplished:

  • online using the My Library Account page
  • by phone (McHenry 831-459-5185 or S&E 831-459-5300)
  • in person at either Circulation Desk

When an item is renewed by a patron on-line, by phone or in person, the borrower is certifying that the items being renewed are in their possession and in good condition.

For more information, please refer to the Renew An Item webpage.
