Databases and Websites

Below is a selected list of some useful sources of species information. To find field guides (both print and online), use Library Search. You can also recommend a book or other resource for the library to purchase.

Birds of the World (formally Birds of North America Online)
BNA Online provides comprehensive and authoritative life histories. Multimedia (sounds and videos) included for many species.
eBird
Searchable data on bird distribution worldwide. Much of the data have been contributed by bird-watchers. Launched in 2002 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, eBird provides rich data sources for basic information on bird abundance and distribution at a variety of spatial and temporal scales.
Calflora
Database of information about plants that grow wild in California (both native plants and weeds). Photos, taxonomy, distribution maps, and more.

Authoritative taxonomic information on plants, animals, fungi, and microbes of North America and the world.

Invasive Species Compendium
Datasheets, maps, images, abstracts and full text on invasive species of the world. An Open Access resource resourced by a diverse international consortium of government departments, non-governmental organizations and private companies.
IUCN Red List of Threatened Species
The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species™ provides taxonomic, conservation status and distribution information on plants and animals that have been globally evaluated.
Butterflies of Central California
Descriptions and population data for 159 species and subspecies of butterflies, plus climate data from nearby weather stations, descriptions of study sites and habitats and photos. Created by UC Davis Professor Art Shapiro.

Land Acknowledgement

The land on which we gather is the unceded territory of the Awaswas-speaking Uypi Tribe. The Amah Mutsun Tribal Band, comprised of the descendants of indigenous people taken to missions Santa Cruz and San Juan Bautista during Spanish colonization of the Central Coast, is today working hard to restore traditional stewardship practices on these lands and heal from historical trauma.

The land acknowledgement used at UC Santa Cruz was developed in partnership with the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band Chairman and the Amah Mutsun Relearning Program at the UCSC Arboretum.
